stage 2 Flashcards
(22 cards)
what is the human nervous system made of
the brain spinal cord and nerves
what is the CNS made of
the brain and spinal cord
how to nerves carry information
nerves carry information from the senses to the CNS and from the CNS to the muscles
how do nerves send messages
messages are sent by electrical impulses which move along the nerve cells
what do receptors do
detect stimuli
how to the sensory neurons send messages
messages are sent to the CNS from the sense organs
how do motor neurons send messages
messages are sent from the CNS to the effectors where a response happens
what is the correct order on how messages travel through the nervous system
stimuli, receptors, sensory neuron, CNS, motor neuron, response
how does the CNS send messages
the CNS sorts out information from the senses and sends messages to those muscles or glands which can make the appropriate response
what is a synapse
it is a gap between two neurons across which a chemical transfers the impulse
what is a reflex action
a rapid, automatic response to a stimulus for protection from harm
why is a reflex arc important
these are rapid involuntary and automatic
conscious thought from the brain is not required
they protect the body from harm
what is an example of a reflex
poking your eye
knee jerk
what are the 3 stages of a reflex arc
the sensory nerve sends messages to the spinal cord
the impulse passes through an interneuron
the impulse is picked up by a motor neuron which transmits the signal to the muscles
name the 4 parts of the brain
cerebrum
cerebellum
medulla
spinal cord
what is a stimulus
something detected by a receptor which triggers a nerve impulse
how does the interneuron pass information
passes information within the CNS from a sensory neuron to a motor neuron
what is the fiction of the cerebrum
responsible for memory, reasoning, imagination and conscious thought
what is the function of the cerebellum
controls balance and muscular coordination
what is the function of the medulla
controls heart and breathing rate
what is the function of the spinal cord
relays impulses between brain and receptors
what is the effector
muscle or gland that responds to a nerve impulse
