Stages Of Mitosis Flashcards

(14 cards)

1
Q

Gene

A
  • Is a section of DNA which is involved in carrying information for a particular trait such as eye color, hair color, etc.
  • There are about 29 to 30 thousands of genes in every cell of the human body.

Q

Stages of Interphase

A

G1- the cell produces new proteins and organelles
S- the cell makes an entire copy of the DNA of the cell and ke proteins are produces
G2- the cell produces the organelles and structures needed for cell division

Q

What happens during interphase

A
  • The cell is growing and taking in nutrients
  • The cell spends most of its time in this phase
  • After this stage the cell is ready for mitosis

8
Q

What happens during prophase

A
  • The chromatin condenses into chromosomes
  • Nuclear membrane breaks down
  • The centrioles move to opposite poles
  • The spindle fibres form and attach to the chromosomes at the centromere and to the centrioles on the other end if an animal cell. Spindle fibres attached to the cell wall if it is a plant cell.

Q

What happens during metaphase

A
  • The spindle fibres move the chromosomes toward the middle of the cell and line them up

10
Q

What happens in Anaphase

A
  • The spindle fibres contract and shorten and pull the sister chromatids apart at the centromere
  • The spindle fibres pull the chromatids to each end of the cell (the poles)

11
Q

What happens in Telephase

A
  • The chromatids reach the poles and the cell membrane pinches inward, eventually splitting the one cell into two cells
  • The nuclei in each new cell reforms
  • The spindle fibres disappear
  • In plant cells, a cell plate forms the cell wall and inner cell membrane in each of the new cells
  • Each new cell is now in interphase and the cell starts again

Q

What are spindle fibres

A
  • Moves chromosomes around the cell
  • They attach to centrioles in animal cells and the cell wall in plant cells
  • They form in prophase

14
Q

Difference between animal and plant cell mitosis

A
  1. Spindle fibres attach to centrioles in animal cells and and attach to the cell wall in plant cells
  2. When animal cells divide they pinch in but when plant cells divide they create a cell plate
