States Of Matter Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a liquid in terms of particles?
Close packed groups (clumps) of particles able to move past each other.
What is the definition of a gas in terms of particles?
Particles far apart moving in random motion
Does a solid and liquid or a gas have a ‘fixed volume’ or a ‘no fixed volume’? and what shapes do they take?
Solids – fixed volume – Fixed shape
Liquids – fixed volume– Adapt shape of container
Gases – no fixed volume – no fixed shape
What is it called when a solid turns into a liquid?
Melting
What is it called when a liquid turns into a solid?
Freezing
What is it called when a gas turns into a liquid?
Condensing
What is it called when a liquid turns into a gas?
Boiling / evaporating
What is it called when a solid turns into a gas, or a gas turns into a solid?
Sublimation
How do you increase the energy of particles?
Heating (particles get further apart)
How do you decrease the energy of particles?
Cooling (particles get closer together)
What is a solid in terms of particles?
Close packed, regular arrangement of particles vibrating about a fixed point. Particles held together by strong attractions ( bonds )
