statistics in psychology Flashcards
(11 cards)
what happens in a quasi experiment
-the two groups already exist eg introverts and extroverts
-collect DV measurements under the 2 conditions for both groups
-control everything else
-compare the DV measurements
what are descriptive statistics
-techniques used for summarising data so we can focus on the important features by reducing the amount of info we’re taking in at once (2 numbers;CENTRAL TENDANCY AND DISPERSION)
What is central tendency
an average that tells us what is TYPICAL about the set of scores as it focuses on the typical person in the condition/group (mean median mode)
what is dispersion
it is s spread that tells us how typical the central tendency is by telling us how the data is spread out (VARIABILITY) looks at the range and standard deviation
PRACTICE CALCULATING SD AND MEAN
what are inferential statistics
Analysis of data to determine whether or not the result of mere chance or are actually the result of manipulation of the variables by the researcher.
what is a test of difference
tells us about the size and consistency of the differences between measurements in 2 different conditions
what can we conclude about what is shown in a test of difference
-large, consistent differences are unlikely to be caused by chance
-small, inconsistent differences are likely to be caused by chance
what test do you use for an independent group design
Mann-Whitney U Test
what test do you use for a repeated measures design
WIlcoxon Signed Ranks Test
PRACTICE WC AND MWU TEST
