working memory model Flashcards
(12 cards)
what part of the msm does the wmm replace
the stm part
give three differences between the msm and the wmm
MSM VS WMM
whole of memory vs only the STM
passive(moves from one comp to another) vs active processer of info
unitary stm vs multi-component stm
what is one thing that both stores agree on
that the short term memory has a limited capacity that is fixed
why does the system overall have a limited capacity
because each component has a limited capacity
what are the three parts to the STM
-phonological loop (information store)
-visuo spatial sketchpad (information store)
-central executive
describe the phonological loop
-only looks at sound, mainly speech
-dedicated to auditory and verbal information
-eg hearing listening speaking
what are the two parts to the PL and describe them
1-articulatory control; inner voice
2-phonological store; the minds ear
describe the VSS
-dedicated to vision and spatial location
-eg processing the colour or shape of something, imagining a stimuli
describe the central executive
-controls the whole system and tells them what to do
-processes info
-modality free meaning it can process any type of info it wants
-important for problem solving
-links to ltm so to access info from ltm,CE directs and receives it
what happens when you practice a certain task recquiring any of these
-less demand on the wmm so demands become smaller and smaller until eventually it becomes automatic
why can the working memory multi task
because each store has their own processing resources
what are the 2 conditions for the WMM being able to multi task
1-the tasks use different components so that they don’t have to compete for the same one
2-the capacity of the WMM is not exceeded (overload)
