What would we use an ENT nasal sterile tray for?
- Epistaxis
- Foreign body removal
- Nasal fracture reduction
- Nasal abscess or hematoma drainage
- Biopsy or culture collection
What is a ronguer? What would we use it for?
A rongeur is a surgical instrument used to cut, bite, or remove small pieces of bone or tough tissue. It’s designed like a heavy-duty pair of forceps or pliers with a sharp-edged, scoop-shaped tip.
Uses:
- common ENT procedures
- neurosurgery
- orthopedic trauma
- spinal surgery
What is a Lebsche Sternum Knife? What would it be used for?
A heavy-duty, hand-held manual surgical instrument designed for cutting into the sternum. It typically has a T-shaped handle to allow the application of pressure to the blade.
A Lebsche sternum knife is primarily used for splitting the sternum during cardiac and thoracic procedures. It’s often employed in midline sternotomy. It’s designed to be hammered or hit with a mallet to provide the force needed to split the bone.
Tracheotomy tray: What is it? What does it have? What could we use it for?
A tracheotomy tray in an ER contains sterile items for performing a treacheostomy, a procedure that creates an opening in the trachea to facilitate breathing.
- Scalpel and other surgical instruments
- Dilators and Retractors
- Gauze and Drapes
- Surgical gloves and gowns
- Suction equipment
It can be used for surgical cricothyrotomy and percutaneous tracheostomy.
* Sterile Tracheostomy Tubes
ER Sounds, Filliforms, and Followers
- Filiforms - thin, wire-like instruments that can be inserted into urethra and used to navigate through a structure. They are essentially “pathfinders” that help guide the dilation process.
- Followers - These are larger dilators that are attached to the filiform after the filiform has successfully passed through the stricture. The follower then dilates the urethra, gradually widening the opening.
This technique is used to improve urine flow by widening the narrowed urethra, which can be a symptom of a urethral stricture.
Paracentesis
Paracentesis is a procedure that removes fluid buildup inside your abdomen, called ascites.
Paracentesis is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
* Diagnostic: To analyze the fluid (ascitic fluid) and identify the cause of the buildup (e.g., infection, cancer, cirrhosis, or other conditions).
* Therapeutic: To relieve symptoms and pain caused by excessive fluid, especially when the cause is known.
- What to expect.
- Paracentesis setup
Burn sheets
Burn sheets are used in first aid to protect burn victims from further injury and contamination while awaiting professional medical help. They are sterile and designed to wrap around the patient, creating a barrier between the burn and the environment.
Do not:
* Use the burn sheet as a wet dressing, as heat loss during transfer to the hospital can be detrimental
* Apply any ointments or creams directly to the burn, as they can interfere with the burn sheet’s protective barrier.
* Attempt to remove the burn sheet if it’s stuck to the burn, as this can cause further damage.
* Use a burn sheet as a permanent dressing, as it should be used as a temporary barrier while awaiting medical care.
