Peterson and Peterson studied the duration of memory where they had tested 24 student PPs and asked them to remember a consonant syllable and a 3 digit number
They had a task to count backwards from the 3 digit number
They had to recall at 3,6,9,12,15 and 18 seconds
At 3 seconds it shows that the recall was about 90% however at 18 seconds the recall was at 2%
this shows that when rehearsal isn’t practiced the duration of STM is 30 seconds or less
