(18 cards)
What is the stomach?
A curved, expanded portion of the alimentary canal
The esophagus enters the stomach through the cardiac sphincter.
What is the cardiac region of the stomach?
The region where the stomach connects to the esophagus through the cardiac sphincter.
What is the fundus of the stomach?
The upper portion of the stomach that lies more posterior in relation to the body.
What is the body of the stomach?
The middle portion of the stomach that lies more anterior in relation to the body.
What is the pylorus of the stomach?
The lower portion of the stomach that lies more posterior in relation to the body.
What is the pyloric canal?
The opening from the stomach into the duodenum (start of the small intestine).
What is the function of the pyloric sphincter?
A muscular valve that releases food, nutrients, or chyme to the small intestine.
What is chyme?
A creamy paste produced by peristalsis to mix food with enzymes and digestive juices.
What is the greater curvature of the stomach?
The lateral aspect of the stomach.
What is the lesser curvature of the stomach?
The medial aspect of the stomach.
What are rugae or gastric folds?
Folds in the stomach that allow for stretching, seen best when the stomach is empty.
What happens to rugae when the stomach is full?
They disappear.
What is the second part of digestion that takes place in the stomach?
Mechanical mixing and chemical breakdown by enzymes.
What type of absorption occurs in the stomach?
Almost no absorption occurs in the stomach.
Many enzymes released into stomach by
Specialized cells
2 main chemicals released
HCL- hydrochloric acid - from pariateal cells
PEPSIN- chief cells
Once chyme is formed all chemicals + food are mixed it is now ready to enter
The small intestine for absorption
1 meal emptied the stomach in _ hrs
Carbs vs fats
4hrs
Carbs faster
Fats slower
