Pressure
Packing
Tourniquet
Direct Pressure
Use gauze or cloth to cover the wound
Apply firm, direct pressure
Focus on the location of the bleeding
Maintain pressure until help arrives
Wound Packing
For deep wounds only
Pack gauze tightly into the wound
Apply pressure after packing - hold pressure
until help arrives
Tourniquet
Apply 2–3 inches above the wound
Never over joints (avoid elbows/knees)
Tighten until bleeding completely stops
Do NOT remove it
Can be applied over clothing
Tourniquets hurt—this is normal
A second tourniquet may be needed if bleeding persists
Impaled Objects
Do NOT remove
Stabilize in place using a “log cabin” of gauze or cloth
Sucking Chest Wounds
Bubbles/noises when breathing = sign of open chest wound
Apply occlusive dressing (airtight seal)
Secure 3 sides to allow air to escape (“burp” if needed)
