Ovaries- Structure, function
Structure: Small, oval-shaped glands on either side of the uterus.
Function:
Produce eggs (ova).
Release hormones like oestrogen and progesterone.
Memory tip: Ovaries = Oval = Ova (eggs)
Fallopian Tubes, structure and function
Function- two thin connecting ovaries to the uterus
Function:
• Carry the egg from ovary to uterus.
Site of fertilisation (where sperm meets egg).
Memory tip: Fallopian = Fertilisation Freeway
Uterus- Structure, function
Structure: Hollow, muscular organ.
Function:
Where the embryo implants.
Grows and supports the foetus during pregnancy.
Memory tip: Uterus = “Uber” for the baby!
Cervix-Structure, function
Structure: Narrow opening between uterus and vagina.
Function:
Entry point for sperm.
Stretches during childbirth.
Memory tip: Cervix = Canal to the uterus
Vagina- Structure, function
Structure: Muscular, lubricated tube.
Function:
Receives penis during intercourse.
Birth canal for baby delivery.
Memory tip: Vagina = Versatile tube (entry & exit)
Vulva-Structure, function
Structure: Outer part of the female genitalia.
Function:
External opening to the vagina.
Protects internal organs.
Memory tip: Vulva = Visible part
Disorders- Endometriosis
What is it?
Tissue similar to the uterus lining grows outside the uterus.
Symptoms:
Painful periods, pelvic pain, fertility issues.
Can sometimes cause irregular periods
Memory tip: Endo = “End” of comfort during periods.
Disorders-Polysistc ovary syndrome (PCOS)
What is it?
Hormonal imbalance causing multiple cysts on ovaries.
Symptoms:
Irregular periods, acne, weight gain, difficulty getting pregnant.
