Structures and Forces Flashcards
(37 cards)
Define structures
A definite shape, and size which serve a purpose
What are natural structures? Give examples
Structures that are not made by people. Examples: Plants, caves, and mountains
What are man-made/ manufactured structures? Give examples
Structures made by people. Examples: The Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower, and the Burj Khalifa
What are mass structures? Give examples
Solid structures which rely on their weight to resist loads. Examples: Pyramids, dams, and brick walls
What are frame structures? Give examples
The “skeleton” of something made of strong materials. Examples: Houses, bridges, and even the human skeleton
What are shell structures? Give examples
A structure with a curved shape that is hollow. Examples: Seashells, eggs, bubbles, and soda cans
What are combination structures? Give examples
A mix of two or more structures. Examples: Football helmets, hydroelectric dams, and airplanes
Pros of mass structures
Easy to build
Holds itself together
Durable
Cons of mass structures
Takes lots of materials
Heavy
Hard to design
Pros of shell structures
Hollow
Thin
Light
Cons of shell structures
They need to be perfect
Hard to make
Pros of frame structures
Easy to design
Easy to build
Cheap
Has space
What is a con of frame structures
You need to consider forces
What does function mean?
What it does
What do aesthetics refer to
The beauty of a design
What is the margin of safety?
Keeping things safe
What are materials?
What objects are made of
True or false: Materials should reflect the purpose of the structure?
True
What are composite materials? What is an example?
Two or more materials that have different properties. Example: Reinforced concrete
What are layered materials?
Layers of different or same material pressed and glued together
What are woven and knit materials? Give an example
Things that are knit together to make strong flexible material. Example: Sweaters
When engineers choose what materials to use when building structures, what 4 things must they consider?
Cost, Appearance, Environmental Impact, and Energy Efficiency
True or false: Rigid joints don’t move but mobile joints do
True
What are fasteners?
Devices that join or attach two or more objects together
