Sunlight reactions Flashcards
(25 cards)
Miliaria- Eti
Heat rash- common in hot, moist climates. Manifests in trunk, intertriginous areas. Plugging and rupture of sweat duct.
Miliaria- Sx
Burning, itching superficial vesicles, red and thin-walled
Miliaria- Tx
Triamcinialone acetonide, 0.1% in Sarna lotion
Solar lentigo- Eti
Increasing age, white people, easily sunburned, from excess sun exposure
Solar lentigo- Sx
Pigmented skin macule on skin exposed to sunlight. light brown to black
Solar lentigo- Tx
Benign- indicates sensitivity to UVR- watch for other types of skin issues
Sunburn- Eti
Acute, delayed transient inflammatory response- photo toxic reaction.
Sunburn-Sx
Painful erythema, mild edema, sharp demarcation between areas
Sunburn- Tx
Prevention! Cool wet dressings, topical glucocorticods, NSAIDs
Drug/ Chemical Induced Photosensitivity- Eti
Simultaneous exposure to drugs and light or chemicals
Drug/ Chemical Induced Photosensitivity-Sx
Exaggerated sun burn response following systemic exposure to photosensitizing agent and UVR
Topical phototoxic dermatitis- sx
erythema, swelling, vesiculation & blistering confined to area of agent.
Dermatoheliosis- Eti
Repeated solar injuries over many years- lifeguards & outdoor worker. Skin exposed areas
Dermatoheliosis- Sx
Atrophy, hypertrophy, telangiectases, spotty hyperkertosis. Skin appears wrinkly, leathery & prematurely aged.
Dermatoheliosis- Tx
prevention of development of skin cancers
Phytophotodermatitis- Eti
Spring & Summer in all climates- due exposure to lime, celery & meadow grass
Phytophotodermatitis- Sx
Hx of exposure + smarting, sunburn pain & pruritus. Bizarre streaks and artificial patterns
Phytophotodermatitis- Tx
Wet dressings in vesicular stage, topical glucocorticoids
Polymorphus light eruption- Eti
Acquired, acute eruptions characterized by delayed abnormal reaction to UV- delayed hypersensitivity. 10-21% prevalence- more common in females
Polymorphus light eruption- Sx
Erythematous macules, papules,- monomorphous eruption lasting 7-10 days following skin exposure
Polymorphus light eruption- Tx
Sunblock, beta carotene, oral predisone to suppress the eruption
Porphyria- Eti
Skin manifestation of disease associated with ingestion of estrogen medications and liver diseases from alcoholism & hep C
Porphyria- Sx
Painless blistering & fragility on dorsal hands, hypertrichosis & hyper pigmentation on face
Porphyria-Dx
elevated uroporphyrins, abnormal liver function tests, Hep C infection, increased liver iron
