What is the difference between embodied carbon and operational carbon?
Embodied carbon is all the CO2 emitted in the production of the building.
Operational carbon is the carbon released from the ongoing operation of the building.
What is BREEAM?
BREEAM stands for the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method.
It is a sustainability assessment method that assesses, rates and certifies the sustainability of buildings. Some of the categories include Energy, Health & wellbeing and Materials.
What is LEED?
LEED stands for leadership in energy and environmental design.
It is a sustainability assessment method that assesses, rates and certifies the sustainability of buildings.
How would you assess embodied carbon in your role as a QS?
I would gather data on specific materials when compiling an estimate / cost plan, including the carbon emissions of the product and the quantity of that material.
Mace now have a bespoke platform that i can insert this data into that produces an embodied carbon assessment. It also offers alternative materials with lower carbon options.
