Swine ascariosis Flashcards
(34 cards)
Size of ascaris suum
male: 15-30 cm
femlae: 20-40cm
What is the size classification of Ascaridida?
Medium – large
Describe the morphology of Ascaridida.
White, spindle shaped, without buccal capsule, three well-developed lips, cervical alae on anterior end
What is the reproductive feature of male Ascaridida?
2 spicules posterior, without bursa, sometimes with small lateral alae
What type of life cycle do Ascaridida have?
Direct
What is the shape and shell characteristic of Ascaridida eggs?
Oval, subspherical and thick shelled
How is Ascaridida transmitted?
Orally, lactogenic, transplacental or eating PH
What are the four main types of development in Ascaridida?
- Ascaroid type
- Toxocaroid type
- Ascaridoid type
- Anisakoid type
Describe the Ascaroid type development.
Entero-hepato-pulmonary migration of larva after hatching in SI
What is the life cycle progression of Ascaroid type?
SI (hatch) - liver - lungs - pharynx - oesophagus - SI (maturate)
Which species are examples of Ascaroid type?
- Ascaris spp.
- Parascaris equorum
Describe the Toxocaroid type development.
Somatic migration and arrested development of larvae
What is the life cycle progression of Toxocaroid type?
SI (hatch) - liver - lungs - Greater circulation - brain, muscle, heart
What can Toxocaroid larvae become?
Hypobiotic (dormant) larvae
Which species are examples of Toxocaroid type?
Toxocara spp.
Describe the Ascaridoid type development.
Histotropic phase confined to mucosa of SI (NO migration!)
What follows the histotropic phase in Ascaridoid type development?
Re-entering of larvae into lumen - Develop to adult stage
Which species are examples of Ascaridoid type?
- Ascaridia spp.
- Toxascaris leonina
- Heterakis spp.
Describe the Anisakoid type development.
Indirect life cycle with IH = Crustaceans, FH = marine mammals, PH = Fish, squids
Which species are examples of Anisakoid type?
Anisakis spp.
What is the definitive host (FH) for Ascaris suum?
Pig – SI
What is the paratenic host (PH) for Ascaris suum?
Earthworm
Describe the eggs of Ascaris suum.
Medium, spherical, 3 thick shells, rough surface, unembryonated, dark brown
What is the life cycle of Ascaris suum?
Unembryonated eggs passed in faeces – develop into infective L3 within the egg (2-4 weeks) - Eggs/PH ingested – L3 hatch in SI – penetration of intestinal wall to veins of cecum and colon – Hepato-Pulmonary migration to lungs – migrate to pharynx, swallowed to SI – moult to L5 and mature to adults
