syndesmology Flashcards
(45 cards)
connective tissue functions
support/structure/protection and binds structures together
ground substance
gel-like substance that fills space between cells + connective tissue fibers
how does ground substance pass nutrients from blood supply to cells + wastes from cells to blood?
diffusion gradient through water associated with GAGs
components of ground substance
glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans, glycoproteins, water
glycosaminoglycans (GAGs)
highly hydrophilic polysaccharides
what is the most abundant + largest GAG?
hyaluronic acid
proteoglycans
large protein molecules w/numerous sulfated GAGs
glycoproteins
large globular proteins covalently bonded to large complex carbs
fibers secreted by fibroblasts
collagen fibers, elastic fibers, reticular fibers
collagen fibers
long fibers, most abundant, strong/resistant to shearing + tearing forces
reticular fibers
flexible scaffolding inside organs. thin fibers made of type III collagen
elastic fibers
thin fibers made of elastin. allows fro stretch + recoil
fascia
connective tissue that supports + surrounds organs
3 types of fascia
superficial, deep, visceral
superficial fascia
makes up hypodermis. composed of loose connective tissue + adipose tissue. attaches skin to underlying structures
deep fascia
slightly stretchable, can stiffen, richly innervated, poorly vascularized, contains lymph system
intermuscular septa
bundles muscles together into compartments
what layer of fascia is the intermuscular septa found in?
deep fascia layer
visceral fascia
loose connective tissue surrounding organs
what is another name for visceral fascia?
subserous fascia
tendons
attach muscle to bone
what are tendons formed from?
deep fascia connective tissue coverings
sharpey’s/perforating fibers
tendon fibers that become incorporated into the outer layers of bone tissue
tendon structure composition
mostly type 1 collagen, minimal ground substance, tenocytes, fibrocartilage
