Syructure And Function Of The Airways Flashcards
Define breathing
The act of breathing air in and out
Process of supplying oxygen to cells;
The chemical and physical process in which oxygen is delivered to tissues or cells in an organism and carbon dioxide and water are given off external respiration
Energy-producing process in cells:
A metabolic process in cells leading to the production of energy by the breakdown of organic substances internal respiration
Why are nasal hairs important ?
Act as a filter to keep the dust and dirt out
Help maintain humidity
Summarise the role of the turbinates in the nose;
Air conditioning - temp and humidity
Filtration - mucus and cilia covered large surface area
Support of the olfactory system
Outline the role of surfactant ;
- air-water interface has high surface tension
- surface tension- strong force trying to minimise surface area
- can cause alveolar sacs to collapse
- infantile respiratory distress syndrome
Describe the pulmonary surfactant:
- secreted by bronchialar clara cells and aveolar type II cells
-99% phospholipid 1%protein
- thin layer on alveolar surface
