Decolonization
the process whereby an imperial power gives up its femoral authority over its colonies
Modernization
The idea that rapid economic development is achieved by a state through a take-off stage in which and entrepenurial class and high investment in economic growth play a crucial part.
Modernization Theory
totalizing, monolithic phenomenon which again and again regardless of the time and place, worked the same basic results for the same basic reasons. Tradition to modernization due to 2 factors:
- Modernizing elites that would bend populations to their modernizing will
- technological diffusion -
Decolonization
- imperial powers had led strong leading roles, creating a new international order which was perceived as a threat especially for Britain, that colonies will not be under their control
- UN imposed human rights and right for self determination (not real change but more room in political view)
- US and USSR emergence as two superpowers created some obstacles to colonialism and opportunity for Africans to achieve self rule
- Colonies were uses as resources to fund war

Idea: rapid economic growth development is achieved by state going through a take-off stage in which entrepreneurial class and high investment in economic growth play crucial roles
Goal: development - achieving unique goal modernity
End of WW2 and empire
1945 - WW2 inspire European forced to mobilize towards victory, but they did not realize that great imperialistic powers like Britain, France and the Netherlands were a threat of loosing imperial possessions
1942 - Japan conquered many European colonies in SE Asia
- America entry the conflict on the side of Colonial Powers increased the pressure on Europe to get rid of its colonies due to Atlantic charter which declared all people had a right to self determination
The end of the Raj
During the WW2 Britain used coercion to retain its rule in India. This became possible by the end of the war as India demanded its independence
- Britain began to negotiate a transfer of power and hoped India would become a dominion country in the commonwealth
- India receives independence but as two states: India and Pakistan
