  • imperial powers had led strong leading roles, creating a new international order which was perceived as a threat especially for Britain, that colonies will not be under their control
  • UN imposed human rights and right for self determination (not real change but more room in political view)
  • US and USSR emergence as two superpowers created some obstacles to colonialism and opportunity for Africans to achieve self rule
  • Colonies were uses as resources to fund war

End of WW2 and empire

A

1945 - WW2 inspire European forced to mobilize towards victory, but they did not realize that great imperialistic powers like Britain, France and the Netherlands were a threat of loosing imperial possessions

1942 - Japan conquered many European colonies in SE Asia

  • America entry the conflict on the side of Colonial Powers increased the pressure on Europe to get rid of its colonies due to Atlantic charter which declared all people had a right to self determination

The end of the Raj

A

During the WW2 Britain used coercion to retain its rule in India. This became possible by the end of the war as India demanded its independence

  • Britain began to negotiate a transfer of power and hoped India would become a dominion country in the commonwealth
  • India receives independence but as two states: India and Pakistan
