Teaching Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is learning?
The cognitive process of acquiring a skill or knowledge, which results in a change in behaviour or thought
What is a curriculum?
A curriculum sets out the knowledge and skills to be learned in a teaching programme. The first step of curriculum planning is to identify learning needs
What is deep learning?
Promotes understanding, results in longer retention and recall of knowledge, and has a good chance of changing attitudes and behaviour
What is superficial learning?
Surface learning focuses on memorising and regurgitating without the prospect of retention, and there may be a lack of understanding
What factors define the utility of an assessment?
- Validity
- Reliability
- Feasibility
- Acceptability
- Educational influence
What is validity, in the context of assessment?
The most important criterion of a quality assessment, that is:
The extent to which the assessment measures what it is intended to measure
What are the different types of validity?
- Face validity
- Content validity
- Construct validity
- Concurrent criterion validity
- Predictive criterion validity
- Consequential validity
What is face validity?
On the face of it, the assessment appears to assess what it should
What is content validity?
Does the assessment cover a wide number of competencies in the curriculum for which learning objectives have been set?
What is construct validity?
How well does the assessment produce expected results?
What is concurrent criterion validity?
How well does the assessment tool compare with the existing best tool or test?
What is predictive criterion validity?
How well does the assessment tool predict future performance?
What is consequential validity?
What are the consequences of the assessment (educational impact)?
What are the steps of 1-minute preceptor teaching method?
- Commitment
- Justification
- Application
- Positive reinforcement
- Correction of mistakes
What is an evaluation?
Examines whether the educational programme is meeting the learners’ needs; looks at the teachers; ensures that assessments are fit for purpose; and influences policy and management in institutions with an educational role
What is appraisal?
Considers personal development as well as educational development and is not measured against any set criteria, nor does it contribute to a formal summative assessment
What are the 2 most widely accepted models of feedback?
- Pendleton’s rules
- Silverman’s agenda-led, outcome-based analysis (ALOBA)
What are the qualities of good feedback?
- Constructive
- Specific
- Timely
- Impactful
- Setting consideration
- Trainee input
- Attentive listening
- Focus on positives
