Tectonic Hazards Additional Flashcards

What are formed at a constructive plate margin?
Sheild volcanoes, small non-destructive earthquakes and oceanic ridges.
How are earthquakes formed at constructive plate margins
- As the plates move apart, it causes hot magma from the mantle to rise up to create new oceanic crust This moves via (slab pull, ridge push, and convection current) This new crust often fractures, causing small non non-violent earthquakes.
How are ocean ridges created
Hot magma rises up and pushes the crust to form oceanic ridges
How are steep valleys formed
On land, when the plates move away from each other, it causes the land to drop between them, creating a steep-sided valley called a rift valley.
How are Sheild Volcanoes created at constructive pate margins
In this rift valley magma often erupts on the surface of this land. This magma is often runny and spreads out before solidifying, creating shield volcanoes with wide, gently sloping sides.
Features of shield volcanoes
- Formed on constructive plate margins
- Have runny lava which spreads along, causing the sides of the volcano to be gently sloping and having a wide base.
