Tectonics Flashcards
(10 cards)
Structure of earth inside out
Solid inner core
Liquid outer core
Mantle(Mesosphere, Asthenosphere putty like, lithosphere hard as )
Evidence of tectonics geological
Fit of continental plates between south America and Africa
The Appalachians and the Scottish highlands share similar rock types / age of rock
Evidence of tectonics Biological
Brachiopids (Marine shellfish) found in Australian and Indian limestones
Marsupial bones found in China
Divergent(constructive)plate boundaries
Create mid ocean ridges where 2 plates pull apart create mountains and mid ocean ridges(Mid Atlantic ridge) created iceland
Convergent boundaries
features
Ocean trenches
Island arcs (Aleutian islands)
Submarine mountain regions
fold mountains
Ridge push
Gravitational Force pushing newly formed buoyant crust down the slope of the ridge
Slab pull
When the denser oceanic plate pulls the plate down with it
Island arcs
- Subduction:
At convergent plate boundaries, one oceanic plate is forced beneath the other, a process called subduction. The denser, oceanic plate sinks down into the mantle, creating a deep ocean trench. - Melting:
As the subducting plate descends, it reaches depths where the pressure decreases and the plate begins to melt. Volatile components, like water, are also released from the sinking plate, further aiding in the melting process. - Magma Formation:
This partial melting of the mantle produces magma, which is less dense than the surrounding rock and begins to rise. - Volcanism:
The rising magma erupts at the surface, creating volcanoes. - Island Arc Formation:
Repeated eruptions of these volcanoes build up layers of volcanic rock, eventually forming islands. The islands are often arranged in a curved chain, creating an island arc.
