Q

Island arcs

A
  1. Subduction:
At convergent plate boundaries, one oceanic plate is forced beneath the other, a process called subduction. The denser, oceanic plate sinks down into the mantle, creating a deep ocean trench.
  2. Melting:
As the subducting plate descends, it reaches depths where the pressure decreases and the plate begins to melt. Volatile components, like water, are also released from the sinking plate, further aiding in the melting process.
  3. Magma Formation:
This partial melting of the mantle produces magma, which is less dense than the surrounding rock and begins to rise.
  4. Volcanism:
The rising magma erupts at the surface, creating volcanoes.
  5. Island Arc Formation:
Repeated eruptions of these volcanoes build up layers of volcanic rock, eventually forming islands. The islands are often arranged in a curved chain, creating an island arc.
