Temperature changes practical Flashcards
(2 cards)
What are the independent / dependent / control variables?
Independent - volume of sodium hydroxide solution
Dependent - max temp reached
Control variables - volume of hydrochloric acid, concentration of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solution
Method
Use measuring cylinder to measure 30cm^3 of dilute hydrochloride acid
Transfer into polystyrene cup
Place cup in beaker
Use thermometer to measure and record acid temp
Measure 5cm^3 of sodium hydroxide solution and transfer into the polystyrene cup
Place plastic lid on cup
Place thermometer through hole in lid
Gently stir with thermometer
Record highest temp reached
Rinse and dry cup
Repeat experiment using 10cm^3 sodium hydroxide solution
Carry out several time, increasing sodium hydroxide solution volume by 5cm^3 each time
Repeat whole experiment
Calculate mean max temp for each volume of sodium hydroxide solution
