Terms Flashcards
(24 cards)
Hypoxemia
low concentration of oxygen in the blood
Hypoxia
Insufficient oxygenation of tissue at the cellular level
Includes: headaches, dizziness, and nausea
Ataxia
Loss of muscular coordination
Cyanosis
Blue coloration of the skin
Thoracostomy Tube
Chest Tube. Placed to drain fluid from the intrapleural pressure in pt who have fluid collection in the lungs (Pluearal effusion, hemothorax, pneuomothorax)
Pneumothorax
abnormal collection of air in the plural space.
Foley Catheter
includes a balloon that is inflated after insertion to keep it in palce (in dwelling)
Straight- Type Catheter
used for temporary drainage purposes
Medication Reconciliation
refers to the process of reviewing the patients medication record at all points of care, including admission, transfer of service, and imaging to discharge
Breakthrough Reaction
refers to a repeat adverse reaction to iodinated contrast material in the patient who has undergone a pretreatment regimen. Pt who develop a breakthrough reaction are at grater risk for moderate or severe allergic reactions during subsequent administration of iodinated contrast material.
Angiocatheter
IV catheter placed within a vein and used to administer fluids, medication and /or contrast media
Butterfly Needle
consists of a hollow needle surrounded by plastic flaps or wings
Intrathecal
Iodinated contrast agent is the injection of the agent directly into the space surrounding the spinal cord
Ex: performed during CT myelography for evaluation of the spinal cord and nerve roots.
Intraarticular
administration of contrast agent in the joint space.
Ex: CT arthrography of joints, shoulder wrist, knees.
Aseptic Technique
to the practice & procedures that a practitioner employs to reduce the risk of infection during the IV administration of contrast media
-hand washing between pt
-wearing disposable gloves
-cleaning the site of venipuncture with alcohol swab
Sterile Technique
maintain a sterile, microorganism-free environment invasive CT procedures biopsy, aspiration and CT arthrograms.
Drip Infusion
the volume of contrast agent is administered at a slow rate over a long period,
*slow rise in blood iodine concentration, is no longer used in CT procedures.
Bolus Injection
iodinated contrast agent is pushed into the bloodstream at a rapid rate over a short period of time. more
Single-Phase Imaging
image acquisition occurs at a single specific time during or after the injection of the contrast agent. Images are acquired in this fashion during a single period of contrast enhancement
Multiphase Imaging
acquisition of multiple series of CT images over timed intervals. Images may be acquired before during, and after the administration of iodinated contrast agent. The periods of delay between subsequent acquisitions are determined by the clinical indication
Extravasation
(infiltration) of the contrast agent outside the blood vessel. WIll be in the surrounding tissue is extremely painful
Urticaria
hives
Pruritus
itching
Contrast-induced nephrotoxicity (CIN)
decline in renal function caused by IV contrast.
Other risk factors: Diabetes, myeloma, Advanced age, cardiovascular disease.
adequate hydration for CIN prevention
