Test 1 Flashcards
What are the 5 themes of geography?
Location Place Human and Envrionmental Interactions Movement Regions
Location
spot/point on the Earth’s surface where something is (absolute or relative)
Place
the physical and cultural characteristics at a location that give it a name – what something is
human and environmental action
people adapting or changing their environment
movement
when something moves, migration for animals, communication for ideas, transportation for goods
regions
an area (group of locations) that share characteristics (physical or cultural)
Explain the difference between location and place
A location is a spot on the Earth’s surface that doesn’t describe what is there
A place is what is found at that location that gives it a name (characteristics)
Compare and contrast absolute location and relative location
absolute location is the specific spot based on a grid system or GIS - address or map coordinates
relative location is a spot in comparison to another spot based on common knowledge - example: here, there, next to, between, behind, in front of, with
Identify 3 types of movement, define what is moving and give an example of how each type of movement affects your life
- Migration - animals, people
- Communication - ideas or info
- Transportation - goods
Identify the 2 reason why the earth has seasons. Explain how the 2 reasons affect the amount of direct sunlight received by a region resulting in seasons
The earth has a tilted axis.
The earth revolves around the sun (revolution)
The tilted axis and revolution around the sun together change which hemispher (N or S) is facing the sun.
Distinguish the earth’s movements of revolution and rotation
Revolution – orbit around the sun - gives years and seasons
Rotations- spins on axis - gives days (not cause seasons)
Identify the 2 types of water found on the earth’s surface and explain why the water cycle is vital to human existence
Fresh water is 3% and 2/3 is frozen. Salt water is 97% .
Humans need water to survive.
The water cycle renews, replenishes, and purifies our water.
Define dry and highland climates and contrast them with climate regions
Dry climates caused by amount of precipitation each year (<20 inches); can occur anywhere
Highland climates caused by height above sea level (altitude or elevation); can occur anywhere
Latitudinal climate regions caused by amount of direct sunlight received each year occur at different latitudes (intervals of 30)
What are the 6 elements of culture
Language Religion Gov't Economy Social Groups History
Language
allows communication; we could not access information without language; other elements of culture would not exist without the ability to communication
Religion
provide beliefs and behaviors
Government
creates and enforces the laws (behaviors)
Economy
the trading (production, transportation, and consumption of goods) of groups
Social Groups
provide social norms (what is acceptable) across the group
History
How people view themselves and others based on past experiences
Explain how the movement of information through language has affected the development of religions, governments, and economics. Discuss how improved technology can cause cultural diffusion.
Communication, the movement of infomation, affects the development of the other elements of culture by
- the exchange of ideas allows the other elements to develop
- access to ideas allows people to learn and changes behavior
Communication leads to cultural diffusion (when groups interact in the cultural traits from each other) by giving people access to ideas. If people didn’t get access to any ideas, they wouldn’t learn from it. If technology increases access to information, then cultural diffusion will increase.
