Immigration
The process of entering a new country to live in
Inclusion
A concept relating to how much individuals can access all aspect to the schooling system, and whether any barriers exist to learning (e.g. illness or exclusion)
Income
The amount of money an individual earns or the money that comes into a household.
Informal education
The education that individuals receive which is considered to encourage students to follow rules, become social individuals, and confirm.
Informed consent
Where a researcher gains the permission of individuals to participate in social research.
Institutional racism
(Usually unintended) racism which exists within social institutions, such as education (may include, for example, high rates of exclusion amongst black Africa, Caribbean students)
Intelligence quotient
IQ test; a test which is scientifically designed to gauge the specific intellectual ability of an individual.
Interactionism
The sociological perspective which subscribes to the view that the individuals have control of a society and created it themselves. One important part of this is labeling theory.
Interest groups
Also known as pressure groups; they seek to influence policy on the basis of common concern.
Interview
A research technique, where a researcher asks the participant questions (which are either open or closed) and receive responses.
Labelling
Where a member of society or social group are characterized a specific way according to how their behavior perceived e.g., a bright student, a rebellious student
League tables in education
The way in which schools are ranked according to national performance measures, they are measured in rank order according to level of national performance. This is relative brackets, i.e. comparable to each each other).
Life changes
The prospects that members of society have based on their income, education, social background, and other circumstances.
Lifestyle
The way of life an individual leads.
Lone parent family
A family, consisting of one parent, (male or female), and their dependent child/children.
