A number of titles suggested for this era including Age of anxiety, diversity, extremism, and world war Pick on and explain by you feel it’s the most appropriate name for the era. Include specific pieces and composers and how they reflect that
I would say age of diversity. This is a time of the breakdown of tonality, expansion of musical genres, diversity of sounds, and increased cultural/fold influences. Breakdown of tonality: 2nd Viennese School Schoenberg (Pierrot Lunaire) referred to as father of atonality. Creator of serialism. His school fostered major composers of new music. Alban Berg (Less strict serialism, romantic/emotion-Expressionism) Anton Webern (strict and mathematical) Diverse sounds: Stravinsky Rite of Spring + rhythmic complexity/irregular meters, after explored Neoclassicism. Steve Reich (come out) using tape loops. John Cage 4 33 using silence and prepared piano in Sonatas and Interludes. Folk influences: Aaron Copland Appalachian/Tis a gift to be simple William Grant Still Afro-American Symphony
