Q

Why did people travel to Britain on the Windrush ?

A

On the 22 June 1948, people from the Caribbean arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex on the Empire Windrush.
Britain was just starting to recover from WWII back then.

The British Nationality Act was passed in July 1948.

This allowed people those living in Commonwealth countries to gain British Citizenship and full rights of entry and settlement.
Thousands of young men and women had served in the British armed forces and answered an advert to come work in Britain as there were loads of different jobs to do.
When the passengers landed they didn’t get the friendly welcome, they had hoped for.
Many of them experienced racism and discrimination.
Many found it hard to get a proper home to live in and British people weren’t friendly.
Later, many of their children were bullied at school, because of the colour of their skin.
Some suffered racial attacks and in later years’ riots took place in Britain.
in 2018, a scandal broke out in Britain when the government threatened many of the Windrush generation with deportation.
Despite many of them living in the UK for many years’, they were told that because of a lack of paperwork, they were living here illegally.
The government under Theresia May apologised for this and a compensation schemes was established, however may of them are still waiting.
