The 6 nutrients Flashcards
(6 cards)
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are chemically neutral compounds of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Simple forms of carbohydrates are sugars. Complex forms of carbohydrates are starches and fibre. The body breaks these carbohydrates down into glucose and uses this to feed its cells and provide the body with energy. Carbohydrates generally make up 50-55% of the macronutrient energy requirements.
Proteins
Chemically, protein is composed of amino acids, which are organic compounds made of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur. Proteins build new tissues, antibodies, enzymes, hormones, and other compounds the body needs to function. Proteins generally make up 12-15% of the macronutrient energy requirements.
Vitamins
Vitamins are organic compounds that are needed for healthy body function. Vitamins facilitate the use of other nutrients. They are involved in regulating growth and manufacturing hormones. There are 13 essential vitamins.
Minerals
Minerals are inorganic and hold onto their chemical structure. Minerals help to build bones and teeth. They aid in muscle function and nervous system activity. There are macrominerals and trace minerals. Minerals also maintain the proper balance of water in the body.
Water
Our bodies are made up of 50-75% of water. We can not produce enough water to maintain this ourselves so we have to consume it. Water fills spaces in and between cells throughout the body, dissolves and carries nutrients through the body, removes waste, and regulates body temperature.
