Q

What is the function of the medulla?

A

It is vital for bodily functions.
It is an extension of the spinal cord but is still the brain. It involves heart rate, breathing , vomiting etc. If you injure this it could be fatal.

Q

What is the function of the reticular formation?

A

It is the central part of the brain and contains neutron pathways. It connects the upper and lower of the brain. Roles in states of consciousness like alertness and sleep

Q

What is the Hypothalamus?

A

Regulates internal body environment. It is about the size of a pea and releases hormones that are involved with thirst and hunger.

Q

What is the main function of the thalamus?

A

It sits in the middle of the brain ans all the incoming information (not smell) is received by the thalamus. The thalamus will direct info to the brain

Q

What are the characteristics of the left hemisphere of the brain.(strategic/logical)

A
  • Receive and process sensations from the right side of the body
-controls voluntary movements on right side of body
    -verbal tasks
    -comprehension(reading righting)
    -analysis(math)
    logical reasoning
17
Q

What are the characteristics of the right hemisphere (creative)

A

-Receive and process sensations from the left side of the body
-controls voluntary movements on the left side of the body
-non-verbal tasks and processing of the `whole’ rather than bits
- special and visual thinking
creativity/fantasy/art/music
recognizing of emotions

18
Q

What is the main function of the frontal lobe?

A

Involved with advanced mental abilities e.g reasoning, planning, problem sloving, symbolic thinking.
Also helps to initiate voluntary body movements.

19
Q

What is the function of the parietal lobe?

A

It receives and processes bodily information
About touch, temperature,muscle movement

20
Q

What is the function of the occipital lobe

A

devoted to the sense of vision. Damage to this can lead to vision impairments

21
Q

What is the temporal lobe

A

Involved with auditory perception. Important in memory aspects of visual perception and recognition.
