What is the cell membrane?
A thin, elastic, and semipermeable barrier between the cell and its surroundings
What is the cell membrane composed of?
Lipid bilayer, proteins, carbohydrates
What is the lipid bilayer made up of?
Phospholipids and cholesterol
What are the types of proteins in the cell membrane?
Integral and peripheral proteins
What are integral proteins?
Proteins that extend through the whole thickness of the membrane
What are peripheral proteins?
Proteins that are attached to the surface of the cell membrane either from inside or outside
What are the functions of cell membrane proteins?
Structural proteins, pumps, receptors, carriers, enzymes, ion channels, tissue typing and antibody processing
What do carbohydrates do in the cell membrane?
They are either combined with proteins or with lipids
What are carbohydrates called when they cover the whole membrane?
Glycocalyx
