What is a political party?
A group formed by people who have similar ideas on how a country should be run.
What does it mean for a candidate to contest elections as an independent?
It means that they do not belong to any political party.
How can a political party implement its ideas?
By forming the government, either by itself or together with another party.
What do parties and candidates do in the lead-up to elections?
They hold campaigns to share their ideas and win support.
What happens on polling day?
Voters vote for the candidate(s) whose ideas they most agree with.
How is a candidate elected?
The candidate with the most votes in an area is elected as the representative of that area in the government.
What happens to the party with the most elected candidates?
It wins the election and gets to form the government.
What was significant about the 1948 election in Singapore?
It was limited to electing six representatives in the Legislative Council, who did not form the government, which was still controlled by the British.
