The Greenhouse Effect (34) Flashcards
(8 cards)
What are the effects of combustion of fossil fuels?
More CO2 released than removed
CO2 increasing
What are the effects of cutting down forests?
Fewer photosynthesis, less CO2 removed
Why should burning of trees be decreased?
More carbon dioxide is released, less trees to photosynthesise.
How can decomposing bacteria contribute to the increase of CO2?
More CO2 is released during respiration.
How does the greenhouse effect work?
- incoming short wave radiation from sun reaches Earth. Absorbed by oceans, plants, Earth’s surface which heats up.
- Surface cools down, giving off long-wave radiation. Some is trapped be certain gasses in Earth’s atmosphere, not all escapes to outer space.
- called greenhouse gasses, trapping heat close to the earth’s surface.
Greenhouse gasses?
CO2, methane, CFC’s, nitrous oxide.
What is global warming?
Due to human activities that emit greenhouse gasses at a very high rate in the atmosphere, there is an excess build-up of these gasses in the atmosphere. This results in a greater amount of heat being trapped and sent back to Earth by these gasses, and therefor, the Earth’s temperature is rising.
Give 7 negative results of global warming.
Heat waves Violent storms Polar ice-caps are melting Climatic changes A change in sea temperatures Changes in world weather patterns More evaporation of water
