The Heart Flashcards
(14 cards)
Pulmonary Circuit
carries blood to and from the gas exchange surfaces of the lungs
Systemic Circuit
Transports blood t o and from the rest of the body
Arteries
carries blood away from the heart
Veins
Carries blood back to the heart
Great Vessels
large veins and arteries that are connected to the heart. connected to the superior end (base) of the heart
Capillaries (Gas Exchange Vessels)
interconnect the smallest arteries and veins. their thin walls permit the exchange of nutrients, dissolved gases (called gas exchange), and wastes between the blood and surrounding tissues.
Right Atrium (Entry Chamber)
Receives blood from the systemic circuit and passes it to the right ventricle
Right Ventricle
pumps blood (that comes from the right atrium) into the pulmonary circuit
Left Atrium
Collects blood from the pulmonary circuit and empties it into the left ventricle
Left Ventricle
pumps blood (from the left atrium) into the systemic circuit
Mediastinum
contains great vessels as well as the thymus, esophagus, and trachea
Auricle
Expandable extension of the atrium
Coronary Sulcus
The deep grove t hat marks the border between the atria and the ventricles
The Heart Wall
outer epicardium, middle myocardium, and an inner endocardium
