What is the internet?
The internet is a global network of interconnected computers that allows communication between devices using TCP/IP.
What is the World Wide Web (WWW)?
The WWW is a service that has web pages and other content that runs on the internet, made up of interlinked hypertext documents using mainly the HTTP protocol.
What is a Local Area Network (LAN)?
A LAN is a network that covers a relatively small geographical area, typically within a single organization.
What is a Wide Area Network (WAN)?
A WAN is made up of many LANs and covers a much wider geographical area, with the internet being the ultimate WAN.
What are Tier 1 networks?
Tier 1 networks are considered the backbone of the internet, connected by fiber optic cables that link different parts of the world.
What are Tier 2 networks?
Tier 2 networks are regionally based and allow connectivity between local area networks.
What are Tier 3 networks?
Tier 3 networks are LANs that enable internet access for homes, small businesses, and individual organizations.
What is packet switching?
Packet switching is the process of breaking data into packets before sending it over the network and reassembling it at the other end.
What is a Uniform Resource Locator (URL)?
A URL is the address of a resource on the World Wide Web, containing the protocol, domain name, and path.
What is an IP address?
An IP address is a unique identifier for each device on the internet, used to direct packets between sender and receiver.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is an easier-to-remember identifier for an IP address, structured hierarchically with domains and sub-domains.
What is a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN)?
An FQDN contains the complete domain name and hostname of the web server.
What is the role of a Domain Name Server (DNS)?
A DNS searches databases to find the corresponding IP address for a requested domain name.
What is the function of internet registries?
Internet registries allocate domain names to IP addresses, ensuring they are globally unique.
