I showed up to the interview in mismatched socks, already off to a bad start. The interviewer [looked me up and down], clearly noticing.

and just when I tried to recover, my phone [went off] mid-answer.

When asked about my weaknesses, I [clammed up]
Clammed up – Became suddenly silent
and things only got worse when they [threw me a curveball] with a surprise coding test.
Threw me a curveball – Surprised me with something unexpected
I had no idea how to respond, so I [talked my way out] of it by complimenting their office decor.
Talked my way out of – Escaped a difficult situation by speaking cleverly
The HR manager [kept a straight face] the entire time,
Kept a straight face – Didn’t laugh or show amusement
but I walked out knowing I’d [blown it].
Surprisingly, they called back.
