My laptop [went kaput] right in the middle of an important Zoom call.
Went kaput – Stopped working suddenly
The IT guy patiently talked me through a fix, but it totally {backfired}.
Talked me through – Explained something step by step
Backfired – Had the opposite or a bad result
I was [at my wits’ end] when the screen froze solid, refusing to respond
Froze solid – Became completely unresponsive
Then, my colleague [chimed in] with the classic line, “Did you try turning it off and on?”
Chimed in – Interjected or added to the conversation
Miraculously, the system came back online just as I was [on the verge of] smashing it.
Came back online – Restarted or reconnected to the system
On the verge of – About to do something
It turned out I’d mixed up the charger cables the whole time. The IT team [had a good laugh at my expense]
Had a good laugh at my expense – Laughed about my mistake
and I [made a mental note] to label every single cord.
Made a mental note – Remembered something deliberately
Now, I keep tabs on all my devices — and my boss still jokes that I should just stick to paper memos.
