Q

what is philosophical scepticism?

A
  • Philosophical scepticism is generallt used as an approach to testing the strength of claims and better understanding the nature of knowledge and justification
  • It arises when the sceptics hypothesis/challenge is said to render one’s ordinary evidence insufficient for justifying one’s beleief that p. The ground for doubt cannot be removed by ordinary eviudence (but may be combatted by philosophical argument)
  • Philosophical scepticism can be applied to classes of propositions so doubt about one member of a class casrs doubt on the whole class. For example, to doubt the single proposition that mind independent objects exists casts doubt on the whole indirect realist theory.
