The Muscular System Flashcards
(8 cards)
what are the types of muscles and their function?
smooth: lines walls of internal organs and blood vessels and is responsible for involuntary organ movement
skeletal: attachment to bones
cardiac: involuntary contraction of the heart muscles to pump blood
what is an example of skeletal muscle?
achilles tendon (back of the leg)
what are Sharpey’s fibers?
fibers that connect the periosteum to the tendon
what is the largest muscle?
gluteus maximus
structure of muscles
skeletal muscle –> muscle fascicle –> muscle fibers (sarcomeres) –> myofibril –> myofilaments
properties of skeletal muscles
excitability
contractability
extensibility
elasticity
layers of skeletal muscles
epimysium: surrounds and provides structure to the muscle.
perimysium: surrounds and organizes muscle fascicles.
endomysium: surrounds each muscle fiber.
sarcolemma: plasma membrane of muscle fiber.
sarcoplasm: cytoplasm of muscle fiber.
myofibril: extend the entire length of skeletal muscle fiber.
structure of smooth muscle
consists of thick and thin filaments that are not arranged into
sarcomeres giving it a non-striated pattern
