The Skeletal System Flashcards
(8 cards)
components of the skeletal system
bones – 206 bones
joints – 360 joints
skeletal system division
axial skeleton (80): skull, spine, ribs, sternum
appendicular skeleton (126): extend from the axial skeleton (shoulders, legs, hips, arms)
what are joints and what are the types of joints?
joints are parts where two or more bones connect.
immovable joint
slightly movable joint
freely movable joint
what are ligaments and tendons made of and how do they differ?
they are made of dense fibrous connective tissue.
ligaments connect bone to bone
tendons connect muscle to bone
types of bones and examples
long bones: humerus, radius, ulna, femur, tibia, fibula, metacarpals, metatarsals, phalanges
short bones: carpals, tarsals
flat bones: cranial bones, sternum, ribs, scapulae

what are the types of bone marrow and their function
red marrow: produces blood cells
yellow marrow: stores fat (energy source)
types of bone cells
