the PDSA Model and Quality Improvement in Health Care Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is Quality in Health Care?
Quality is a measure of excellence and meeting customer needs. In health services, it means doing the right thing, the right way, at the right time.
What is Quality Improvement (QI)?
A cyclic process involving:
* Measuring performance gaps
* Understanding causes of gaps
* Testing and implementing interventions
* Studying effects and planning corrective actions.
Why is Measurement Important in Quality Improvement?
It distinguishes perceived performance from actual performance, establishes a baseline for future evaluations, helps avoid ineffective solutions, and monitors improvements and prevents regression.
What are the Key Quality Improvement Models?
- Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
- Total Quality Management (TQM)
- Performance Improvement Approach (PIA)
- Six Sigma
- Lean Methodology
- 5S (Sort, Set, Shine, Sustain, Standardize)
- PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act)
What is the PDSA Model?
An iterative, four-stage problem-solving model for process improvement involving planning, implementing, testing, and identifying further changes.
When Should the PDSA Model be Used?
For continuous improvement, when starting new improvement projects, when developing or improving processes, products, or services, when defining repetitive work processes, and when planning data collection and analysis.
What are the Three Fundamental Questions in the PDSA Model?
- What are we trying to accomplish? (IDENTIFY)
- How will we know that a change is an improvement? (ANALYZE)
- What changes can we make that will result in an improvement? (DEVELOP)
What are the Steps in the Quality Improvement Process?
- Step 1: Identify - Determine what to improve.
- Step 2: Analyze - Understand the opportunity for improvement.
- Step 3: Develop - Explore potential changes for improvement.
- Step 4: Test and Implement - Test changes on a small scale.
What are the Stages of the PDSA Cycle?
- Plan: Define the change, who will implement it, and how it will be measured.
- Do: Execute the plan and document any issues.
- Study: Analyze the results and determine if the change was effective.
- Act: Decide to adopt, adapt, or abandon the change based on results.
How to Monitor and Sustain Improvements?
- Standardize successful changes.
- Provide ongoing training.
- Continue monitoring and reporting improvements.
- Move to new improvement opportunities.
