The Periodic Table Flashcards
(12 cards)
1
Q
what are the vertical columns called?
A
groups
2
Q
what does the group of an element show?
A
the number of electrons an element has in its outer shell
3
Q
what are group 1 elements called?
A
alkali metals
4
Q
what are group 7 elements called?
A
halogens
5
Q
what are group 0 elements called?
A
noble gases
6
Q
what are the horizontal rows called?
A
periods
7
Q
do elements in the same group all have similar or different properties?
A
similar
8
Q
what side of the periodic table are metals on?
A
the left
9
Q
what side of the period table are non-metals on?
A
the right
10
Q
metal properties
A
- metals conduct electricity because they allow charge to pass through them easily
- metal oxides are basic - this means they will neutralise acids
- metal oxides which dissolve will form solutions with a pH of more than 7
11
Q
non-metal properties
A
- non-metals are poor conductors of electricity
- non-metal oxides are acidic - this means that they will neutralise bases
- they dissolve in water to form solutions with a pH of less than 7
12
Q
group 0 element properties
A
- group 0 elements are noble gases
- they are inert (unreactive) and colourless gases
- the reason for this is that it takes a lot of energy to add or remove electrons from a noble gas atom
