Q

What is the relationship between the subconscious and conscious parts of the mind?

A

The subconscious receives data supplied by the senses, analyzes it, and filters out that which is not critical; the rest of what is critical gets sent to the attention of the conscious mind.

Q

How do stories work in the process of subconscious filtering?

A

Stories allow for learning in areas that the conscious mind would have shut down if the direct teaching approach was used. The message “flies under the radar” of the conscious objections.

Q

Why don’t people use stories for changing beliefs, attitudes, and perceptions on a wider scale?

A

Because we want others to know we are trying to be helpful and we want credit for our efforts!

You do not get these things from storytelling in this context.

Q

What key things should you remember in telling a story for change?

A

Don’t explain the message before or afterward.

Use “real stories” whenever possible; but remember, a metaphor can also do the job.

Treat “change effecting” stories as silver bullets; don’t overdo them.
