The 95 Theses
A list of arguments written by Martin Luther in 1517. He criticized problems in the Catholic Church, especially the sale of indulgences, and called for reform.
Indulgences
Payments people made to the Catholic Church in exchange for forgiveness of sins. This practice was one of the main causes of the Protestant Reformation.
The Renaissance
A period in Europe from the 1300s–1600s known for a rebirth of learning, art, science, and interest in classical ideas from Greece and Rome. (Started in Florence)
Martin Luther
A German monk who started the Protestant Reformation by writing the 95 Theses. He believed people could be saved by faith alone, not by buying indulgences.
Henry VIII
The King of England who broke away from the Catholic Church and started the Church of England because the Pope wouldn’t let him get a divorce.
Leonardo da Vinci
A famous Renaissance artist, scientist, and inventor. He painted the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, and sketched ideas for flying machines. (Renaissance man)
Machiavelli
A Renaissance writer and political thinker who wrote The Prince, a book about how rulers should do whatever it takes to keep power—even if it means being dishonest. (Loved vs. feared)
