The Respiratory System: Anaerobic Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
What is ‘Anaerobic Respiration’?
A
- Respiration that occurs in the absence of oxygen
2
Q
What is the equation for Anaerobic Respiration?
A
Glucose – Energy – Latic Acid
3
Q
When does this type of respiration occur?
A
When the body works without sufficient oxygen being supplied to the muscles
4
Q
When would Anaerobic respiration be used?
A
- As oxygen is not be used to generate the energy, it can only be used for short bursts
5
Q
What is ‘Oxygen Debt’?
A
- This is what happens as a result of the muscles respiring anaerobically during vigoruous exercise
6
Q
What happens as our body runs out of sufficient supplies of oxygen?
A
- We call on glycogen stores in the body as an alternative energy supply
7
Q
How long can we respire anaerobically for?
A
- A maximum of approximately 60 seconds
8
Q
In this time what is our body doing? (respiring anaerobically)
A
- We are effectively ‘borrowing’ oxygen, which is then ‘owed’ to the body. This is known as Oxygen DEBT.
