What was the assembly?
A meeting organised by the league
- every country sent a representative to the assembly
- they only joined the assembly if invited
what was the function of the assembly?
- to recommend action to the council
- to vote who can join the league
- debate about actions or solutions
- Meet once a year
how often did they meet up?
once a year
what was the idea of unanimity?
- they ALL had to agree with the decisions
- if one country doesn’t like the decision, the decision doesn’t follow
what was the permanent court of international justice?
- based in the netherlands and was made up of judges from the member countries
- this was meant to be a huge part of the league by settling beef of other countries peacefully
- it would also solve the border dispute of countries
who are examples of permanent members of the league?
britain, frace, japan, italy (1920)
what was temporary membership?
they were elected by the assembly for three-year periods
What was a veto?
each of the members had a veto, this meant that just ONE country could stop the whole council from acting.
what was the function of the secretariat?
kept records of the league’s decisions & meetings
what was the international labour organisation? (ILO)
- ILO brought together employers, governments and worker’s representatives
- aim was to improve the working conditions around the world
- collected info & stats about working conditions
what problems may arise from the league’s structure?
the power is placed on the minority and therefore not listening to what the majority want
what was the mandates commisions?
- many of germany’s former land was now LON’s madates ruled by Gb+Fr on behalf of league
- this comission hired expert reporters whose job it was to report to the league if Gb+fR were treating people with respect

- abolish slavery around the world
- stop workers being treated like slaves
refugees comissions
- LON wanted to help the hundreds of thousands of refugees after the war esp. those in the new russian lands (e.g. Balkans)
health comittee
- attempted to deal with the problems of dangerous diseases and to educate people about health and hygiene.
strengths of unanimity
- prevents league from being dominated by powerful countries
- gives all countries a say
weakness of unanimity
took one negative vote to stop an act, this made decision making difficult.
why was The border dispute in Corfu a failure? (1923)
- a bigger power was able to dominate the league ( Italy who was supposed to be a permanent member)
- league was overshadowed by a rival constitution
- Gb + Fr divided on that to do (France occupied in the Ruhr)
Why was the bulgarian border dispute a success?
- Gb + Fr act decisively + in unity
- perpetrators (Greece) accepted decision
- league acted quickly
