Q

What are the 4 main charcteristics of igneous rocks?

A
  • hardest of all three rock types
  • often contain crystals
  • resistant to erosion (they are formed of crystals)
  • usually impermeable

Q

What type of rock is basalt?
How does it form?

A
  • basalt is an igneous gray rock
  • it is formed from very small crystals

Q

What type of rock is granite?
- give two characteristics of granite?

A
  • granite is an igneous rock
  • granite is affected by chemical weathering
  • granite landscapes drain badly (so tendto be boggy)

Q

What type of rock is sandstone?
Give 3 characteristics of sandstone

A
  • sandstone is a sedimentary rock
  • made of sand- sized grains semented together
  • It can be hard and resistant to weathering
  • permeable

Q

What type of rock is slate?
Give two characteristics of slate

A
  • slate is a metamorphic rock
  • slate easily splits into thin layers
  • formed from mudstone at convergent plate boundaries
(schist is formed at a higher presure at the same plate boundary)

Q

How are igneous rocks formed?

A
  • begin as magma cooling inside the earth OR lava cooling on the earth’s surface after a volcanic eruption

Q

How are sedimantary rocks formed?

A
  • small particles of rock transported by water, ice or wind after weathering
  • most will eventually reach the seabed
  • over years layers of sediment accumulate and compress into sedimentary rocks
  • these rocks are laid down in layers

Q

How are metamorphic rocks formed?

A
  • begin as igneous or sedimantary roks but are later altered by heat or pressure
  • for example, when tectonic plates push together

16
Q

What type of rock is basalt?
Where is it found in the UK?

A
  • basalt is an igneous rock
  • it is found in the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland
17
Q

What type of rock is granite?
Where is it found in the UK?

A
  • it is an igneous rock
  • exposed in many places in Devon, Scotland and Cornwall
18
Q

What type of rock is clay?
How does it form?

A
  • clay is a sedimantary rock
  • formed from the deposits and compression of mud
19
Q

What type of rock is limestone?
How does it form?

A
  • limestone is a sedimentary rock
  • consist of calcium carbonate which come from the remains of plants and animals
20
Q

What type of rock is marble?
How is it formed?

A
  • marble is a metamorphic rock
  • marble is formed from limestone
21
Q

Where are sedimatary rocks (particularly limestone) found in the UK?

A

On the UK South Coast

22
Q

What type of rock is slate?
Where is it found in the UK?

A
  • slate is a metamorphic rock
  • large outcrops of slate are found in Scotland, Northern England and Wales
23
Q

What are the main physical processes that form upland and lowland physical landscapes? (6)

A
  • glacial erosion
  • deposition
  • weathering
  • climatological processes
  • post glacial rover processes
  • slope processes
24
Q

What is the definition of erosion? (1)

A

when broken rocks or sediment are picked up and moved to another place by wind, water or ice

25
What it the definition of weathering?
the in-situ processs where rocks are worn away or broken down into smaller pieces by wind, water or plants
26
What is the definition of deposition?
material being transported by a river is dropped (usually occurs when the river loses energy) either when a river shallows or at the mouth where it meets a lake or ocean
27
UPLAND AREAS OF THE UK: What is a Batholith?
a large mass of intrusive igneous rock that forms and cools deep in the earth's crust sedimantry rocks surrounding it are exposed by erosion from glaciers and weathering
28
Where are lowland areas of the UK located? Why are they located here?
- the south-east of england - it wasn't covered in glaciers during the last ice age
29
How has geology like boulder clay managed to form in the south east of England?
during the ice age a lot of the eroded material was deposited around the edges of the ice in southern areas
