TherEx Week 1 Flashcards
(58 cards)
what soft tissue is damaged when you have a STRAIN
Muscle, Tendon
what soft tissue is damaged when you have a SPRAIN
Ligament
if you strain a muscle is it a complete tear or partial tear
partial tear
how many grade of sprains are there and what are they ?
Sprain (grade I-III)
* Grade I - ligament stretched but intact
* Grade II - incomplete or partial tear
* Grade III - complete tear
what is a subluxation?
incomplete or partial dislocation
what is a dislocation?
Complete loss of anatomical
relationship
Which direction is the hip most commonly dislocated?
POSTERIORLY
Which direction is the shoulder most commonly dislocated?
ANTERIORLY
Tendinitis
inflammation of the tendon
tendinosis
chronic degradation of the tendon WITHOUT inflammation
Tenosynovitis
inflammation of the synovial membrane
Tenovaginitis
inflammation with
thickening of a tendon sheath
Ganglion
Ballooning of the wall of a joint capsule
occurs usually with RA
Synovitis
Inflammation of a
synovial membrane
what is Dupuytrens contracture ?
Abnormal thickening of the skin in the palm of the hand
Hemarthrosis
Bleeding into a joint
what is an intrinsic muscle spasm
hypercontracted state that results in decreased circulation and inc of metabolites
what is reflex guarding
having the muscle contracted due to fear of injury
Grade 1 strain
minimal strength loss
Less than a 15° deficit with the AKE test
slight pain when muscle is on stretch
Myofascial compartment syndrome
Increased pressure in a closed, nonexpanding,
myofascial compartment
* Results in ischemia and causes tissue damages
Grade 2 moderate strain
Moderate tearing of muscle fibers, but the muscle is still intact
A 16° to 25° deficit with the AKE test
Acute stage of healing when would you feel pain in relation to ROM
expect pain at rest without any movement
Grade 3 Severe strain
Complete tear of the muscle
A 26° to 35° deficit with the AKE test
A possible palpable mass of muscle tissue at the tear site
Subacute stage of healing when would you feel pain in relation to ROM
you will experience pain before tissue resistance
