Q

who is responsible for demonstrating neurogenesis in humans

A

Fred “Rusty” Gage

  • injected a substance called BrdU into people \
  • BrdU is incorporated into dividing cells so they can be tracked
  • BrdU can be used to track how aggressive a tumor is by using it to watch its growth rate
  • after patients injected with BrdU died, Rusty opened up their brain to find new neurons in the hippocampus
  • turns out same part of the hippocampus that rats and monkeys had most neuron growth as well
