How is funding for PSB and Commercial radio different?
PSB - funded by the government/public through taxing systems such as the TV licences. Less funding
Commercial Radio - funded by private companies, often has higher funding
How does the content provided differ between PSB and commercial?
PSB - makes content that may not appeal to mass/mainstream audiences, as it isn’t concerned with profit, concerned with the informing, educating and entertaining of the public, meets the needs of the public first as it is ‘publically owned’
Commercial radio - makes content to appeal to mass audiences, as since they are made by private companies they are concerned with profit and power
How are the missions of PSB and Commercial radio different?
PSB - inform, educate and entertain
Commercial - make profit, attract mass audiences
What radio service is HYHGP featured on?
Radio 5 Live
How does HYHGP differ and is similar to usual Radio 5 products?
Differ - not traditional in formatting each episode is different, explores ideas of poetry, rap and political, economic and social issues, use of fictional stories, use of slang and colloquial language, use of hip hop soundtrack
Similar - explores real issues and topics, use of narrator over content
How has Digital Convergence affected Production of Radio Products?
positives - makes production cheaper, more easily accessible, wide variety of products can be produced with low risk, new stations can platform products with low risk
negatives- high saturated of the internet of new products means good products may be lost in high concentration of media
How has Digital Convergence affected Distribution of Radio Products?
positives - wider reach to audiences globally, mobile devices allow for more direct personalised distribution of radio programmes, idea that producers don’t need to rely on scheduling and watershed anymore as it can be streamed on multiple platforms on demand
How has Digital Convergence affected Circulation of Radio Products?
positives - allows more visibility across social media platforms
negatives - less interactivity than on live radio programmes
How does HYHGP reflect the BBCs diversity and inclusion plan 2022?
- idea of a ‘BBC for all of us’, which links to funding and platforming George as a young black man of Ugandan descent, who studied at Cambridge university
- idea of ‘Investing in diverse leadership’ as it applies to Curran and Seatons idea of more diverse patterns of leadership lead to more creative and adventurous products, as HYHGP is an alternative product that would not usually be seen on BBC
How does HYGHP challenge and support Curran and seatons idea of being governed by the logic of profit and power?
Challenges - funded by PSB, BBC, which are publically funded, meaning they do not need to prioritise profit therefore not being restricted by need to appeal to mass audiences
Support - the idea that the BBC is a large company, with large influence, within the UK and therefore may fund and platform products like HYHGP for tokenisation, wanting to appeal to more audiences, maintaining its position of power
How does HYGHP challenge and support Curran and seatons idea of concentration limiting or inhibiting creativity?
Supports - idea that cheaper production due to digital Convergence can lead to inhibition of creativity, as it has an increased concentration
Challenges - the format of HYHGP is by its nature creative and alternative, each episode has a different idea and format meaning it is difficult for episodes to become repetitive regardless of the concentration of episodes produced

How has Digital technology impacted self regulation?
Idea that self regulation has become a large part of regulation of the media as because of the lack of traditional regulators in the digital age, companies must ensure they self regulate to meet the needs of consumers and citizens

Idea audiences who agree with the ideological messages and themes within each episode will have the dominant hegemonic reception. Moreover, the idea that audiences who feel under-represented may therefore feel represented and align with the product
What audiences may have a negotiated reception of HYHGP?
- the idea that audiences may be interested in specific aspects of each episode but not entirely agree with all things discussed as each episode is different and is often uniquely formatted
- audiences may also watch the podcast based on its platform on Radio 5 live, so may listen as they are listeners of the station but again, not entirely agree with its ideologies and values
What audiences may have an oppositional reception of HYHGP?
- idea audiences may have opposing views to the topics addressed within the episodes, the episodes have a more left wing stance, exploring stories that critique government systems and explore drug dealing
- this would avoke an oppositional reading from conservative, right wing audience
What is the ‘Common Grounds’ website?
A website created by George and his team for the podcast, it allows fans to submit fan art, which is given a main place on the website, moreover there is a section highlighted on the website called ‘Your Call’ this allows audiences to submit voice notes allowing them to give insight on topics discussed and communicate thoughts about episodes
How does Jenkins idea of fans as producers apply to HYHGP?
Fans create fan art based on HYHGP and are encouraged to produced fan art like this by George as he has aspects of the common grounds website where fan art will be featured on the main page
How does Jenkins idea of fans as distributors apply to HYHGP?
Fans are distributors as they have an essential part in the distribution of content, being able to share episodes and clips over social media, increasing the reach to different audiences
How does Jenkins idea of fans as activists apply to HYHGP?
Fans are encouraged to align to the political ideologies and themes within HYHGP, as each episode is based around injustices and inequalities that audiences are encouraged to delve deeper and spread awareness
