What are Anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments?
Long ligaments that run down the length of the vertebral column, covering the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs
What does the anterior longitudinal ligament limit?
Extension
What does the posterior longitudinal ligament limit?
Flexion
What is the ligamentum flavum?
A short but thick ligament that connects the laminae of adjacent vertebrae from C2-S1
What does ligamentum flavum limit?
Flexion
What are the ligaments of ligamentum flavum like in the cervical region?
Thin, but broad and long
What are the ligaments of ligamentum flavum like in the thoracic region?
Thicker
What are the ligaments of ligamentum flavum like in the lumbar region?
Thickest (mainly lumbar flexion is limited)
What is the origin and insertion of the supraspinous ligament?
C7 vertebra

What does the supraspinous ligament limit?
Flexion
What is the interspinous ligament?
Anteriorly, its fibres connect with ligamentum flavum, whilst posteriorly its fibres connect with the supraspinous ligament

Slightly developed
What are the ligaments of the interspinous ligament like in the thoracic region?
Narrow and elongated
What are the ligaments of the interspinous ligament like in the lumbar region?
Broader, thicker and quadrilateral
What is the intertransverse ligament?
Ligaments that are placed between the transverse processes of the spine
What can the intertransverse ligaments often blend with?
Intertransverse muscles

A few irregular, scattered fibres that are often replaced by muscles

Rounded cords intimately connected with the deep muscles of the back
