Threats to Democracy Flashcards
(4 cards)
Media bias and voting…
Voters must make informed decisions based on unbiased information. Most voters get their political information from media platforms today, where much of the information is fake, partial, or rumour, making their votes unreliable.
Influence from vested interest…
Wealthy organisations often pay political parties to change their policies which best suit their personal interest, meaning the party will be biased towards the views of a non-majority proportion of voters.
Organised crime…
Groups and networks that perform carefully planned out criminal acts affect national security and citizen safety. E.g. major drug, weapons and human trafficking, armed robberies or political blackmail.
Corruption
Taking advantage of power for personal gain, often occurring in political circumstances, trade unions and private businesses. It can come in many forms and affects the stability of a nation politically, socially and economically.
